What $1M Gets Ya.

Interior Design

I was speaking with my grandparents yesterday about the rising cost of purchasing a home in the Boston proper area. They were pretty taken aback when I told them that it’s pretty unlikely to find a decent home for under $1M here in the area. (I know…crazy, right?!). I guess living in one of the best cities in the US comes with a hefty price tag! So this conversation got me thinking about what $1M looks like in various cities around the US. I chose 5 popular cities: Boston, Atlanta, San Fransisco, NYC, and Arlington, Iowa.

Oh wait, is Arlington, Iowa not on your radar? Well it should be. Know why? Because this hot corn shucking, flannel shirt wearing, John Deer driving stud muffin is from there:

That’s right ladies, Chris the Bachelor is back! I will keep my intense love for the bachelor to myself, but let’s just say you may want to tune in. Or move to Arlington. Your call.

Moving on…it’s actually really interesting- and alarming- to see how these $1M homes differ across the US. Check it out:

1. Boston, MA

This 1,100 square foot South End home is in a boutique luxury building with a concierge, bicycle storage, dual elevators, garage parking and common roof deck. This pristine 2 bed/2 bath home features an inviting open living/dining area with a high end kitchen outfitted with Wolf, Sub Zero and Bosch appliances. Comes with in unit laundry, custom upgrades including electric window treatments, recessed lighting, Sonos System and new carpets in bedrooms.

2. Atlanta, GA

This 4,325 square foot 5BR/5BA luxury Atlanta home is in the popular neighborhood of Brookhaven. The home features an open concept living area w/ fireplace and gourmet kitchen w/ island and breakfast area, formal dining room & guest suite with full bath. It has a fully finished basement with guest room, media room & bathroom. Walk-out backyard with wonderful patio. True walking distance to the shops & restaurants of Village Place Brookhaven.

3. San Francisco, CA

This bright & airy 943 square foot 1/1 home is on the 8th floor of a luxury building in Mission Bay.  It overlooks the park with water views and comes with 1 parking space and one storage room. Elegant hardwood floors, a private balcony, and a modern kitchen with stainless steel Bosch appliances, Ceasarstone counter tops, and sleek Italian-inspired cabinetry. Includes in-unit washer/dryer, central A/C, and an abundance of closet space. Building amenities include 24-hr lobby ambassadors, lounge room, movie theater, pool room, business center and conference room, full length swimming pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna, gym, locker room with showers, and more.

4. New York City, NY

This brand new 843 square foot 1/1 condo is located in the Upper East Side. The unit features gorgeous hardwood oak flooring, modern amenities & natural sunlight with open Eastern exposures. Large double-pane windows are in every room, as well as a floor to ceiling glass door leading to an enormous 984sf private outdoor terrace. 5. Arlington, IA

Truth be told there were no homes within 60 miles of Arlington for sale for over $500K (probably all farm land), so this house is in nearby Cedar Rapids. No surprise here in this home is the best bang for your buck. This 6,700 square foot 4/6 mansion boasts 3 master suits, multiple custom built staircases, a theater room, wine cellar and full camera security system. The open floor plan features a spectacular, state of the art kitchen, family room, and formal dining room. There’s a gazebo, gorgeous back year & space for a hot tub.

This is so sad but true! Honestly, the GA location interests me the most. If I could take all my family and friends and move down south, I would. I’m so over the high living expenses (I live on the South Shore which is less $$) and cold winters in MA. That being said…Boston does have its historical charm.

I totally agree! I love the city life in Boston, but you definitely get more bang for your buck in GA. The eternal debate!!
